Their objective then was to remove that 'threat' so that they could push westwards without any interference from European powers.
They knew well that pushing westwards would necessitate a well organised long term plan of intentional genocide, ethnic cleansing and settlement.
They needed to be able to say to all European Powers, especially The British Parliament within which many of the Irish and Colonial Plantation owners and shareholders sat, that 'it's none of your business, it is an internal American affair.'
USA has never been a healthy place for Native, Latino, African peoples.
Trump is merely all of that unveiled, so the delusion of the American Dream is clarified.
As to the Irish part in the conquest of The West, that's another story.
One that ought to be told, with exacting honesty, given what James Connolly wrote in 1908: "Let no Irishman throw a stone at the foreigner; he may hit his own clansman".
He wrote this to discourage xenophobia and remind workers that Irish and others people have historically been working class immigrants across the globe, and that the enemy of the working class is the Owner Class, the Plantation Oligarchy, the Colonial Mindset.
Today, do not celebrate America, advocate for robust de-colonisation.

In Wealth-as-Power psychologies a Leader is one who controls a group of people, directing and utilising the group according to his or her agenda, backed by by factions of competing supporters. The leader nominally holds all the power, backed by a bureaucracy to enforce that power. The group obeys.

In egalitarian psychology a group that shares power and responsibility elects a spokesperson to transmit their decisions and approach. The spokesperson holds no power to decide on anything.
The latter is genuine democracy. The former will present as democracy, as a cos-play.
This is where we are.
Those who argue that Western Democracy is superior to everything else clearly do not understand this.

It makes no evolutionary sense in our current predicament, where a minority pose such a profound and imminent threat to the health and safety of our human species, our shared environment and, off course, all other living species.
The necessity of accurately understanding the problem is paramount.
