Power Disparity - a general overview, David Smail, Sarah Blatter Hrdy

An adult human is naturally enough more powerful than a human infant, a toddler or a child.

egalitarian cultures typically trust their children, they do not bully them

A healthy adult never exploits that power disparity to force the child to meet the perceived needs of the adult. A healthy adult uses that power disparity to care for the child, careful to meet the child's need, cognisant of the fact that the child's capacity for taking responsibility and taking action is a changing dynamic, one that is to be trusted and nurtured so that the child matures into a healthy adult.

A healthy adult would never leverage power over another in order to meet his or her perceived needs.

A healthy adult would never bully a child.

What kind of culture would generate adults who would bully a child?

Indian Residential Schools in Canada and America, a regime from the 1840s to the 1990s

Cultures that generate Power Hierarchies where superiority/inferiority values are normalised tend to be inequitable and violent.

Such cultures are innately exploitative. Such cultures generate a lot of trauma that is never resolved or healed.  Healthy parenting is made much more difficult within such cultures.

We have ample evidence that the way a hierarchy of power culture relates to a treats the children is symptomatic and traumatising, and that this intergenerational retraumatising is a leading factor in maintaining the hierarchy of power as a cult(are). The values of Power over others are internalised bye direct experience.

It is clear that these cultures are not expressions of optimal biological health for the human species.

Alloparenting.

A major behavioural separation between Primates and Hominims is that within Hominims the practice Alloparenting is widespread.

Alloparenting is where the whole community shares in the care of the children, and other vulnerable members. Alloparenting means 'Other Parents'. Cultures where a child will have many Mothers, Fathers, Aunties and Uncles and older siblings and their friends who all share in the care of the child. Care is a lifelong practice.

'Mothers and Others' is a book positing the hypothesis that alloparenting is the dividing behavioural point between Primates and Hominins, or Monkeys, Apes and Humans. Well worth a read.

That behavioural difference is associated with or close correlates with the development of the much larger forebrain of the Hominims.

The natural healthy development of Emotional State Self Regulation is a staple of healthy relationships (and is not the same a suppression of emotions) requires activation of the fore brain - thoughtful, reflective, considered action oriented - to calm the emotional brain - because the emotional part of the brain, the amygdala and hippocampus part is reactive, sudden action oriented. This capacity is best learned in infancy, through an experiential dynamic of being cared for, all needs being met in a timely fashion.

The healthy person's emotional state is self regulated, which is key to healthy working relationships across a community of people who care for one another.

We are human, after all, and we have moods, we can feel discomfort, pain, confusion, irritation because we are sensitive and we live within a dynamically changing environment. Accidents can happen, we can wake up out of sorts, we feel....  and being able to deal with those feelings, being able to respond rather than blindly react, is a sign of maturity. We call it emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence seeks to neutralise power disparities. Emotional blindness seeks to exploit power disparities.

David Smail writes about Power Disparity as a factor in human psychological distress.

His website is off-line, however way back machine has archived it, and I found it very useful indeed, in bringing workable insight to the problems we are facing today with regards Power, Hierarchy, Psychological Distress and Human Unhappiness.

I have a number of his books in my small library.

David Smail - Biographical Note

Born 23.4.38 at Putney, London, David Smail studied philosophy and psychology at University College London, and was awarded a PhD in psychology there in 1965.

He entered the National Health Service as a clinical psychologist in 1961, and in 1964 joined Tom Caine's psychology department at Claybury Hospital in Essex, which was at that time pioneering the 'therapeutic community' approach to the treatment of mental disorder. There followed a fruitful period of collaboration with Dr Caine, resulting in a number of research publications supporting therapeutic community methods.

David Smail moved to Nottingham in 1968, where he remained as head of clinical psychology services until 1993. He retired fully from the NHS in 1998. He held the honorary post of Special Professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nottingham from 1979 until 2000.

David died on 3 August 2014. The Guardian published an obituary available athttp://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/aug/17/david-smail

There is a War being Waged by Wealth as Power against all of us, irrespective of our amateur political leanings.

https://dwylcorneilius.blogspot.com/2022/01/why-oligarchy-are-at-war-against.html

The Fossil Fuel and Mining Oligarchy knew about Climate Disruption 50 years ago. Their own Scientists confirmed it. The Shareholders decided to deny the Science. They wanted to keep drilling, producing, maintain and increase consumption in order  to amass ever more Wealth as Power.

That makes them culpable for the avoidable harms they chose not to avoid.

That culpability also makes them liable for the costs of the harms caused, and other ancillary costs associated with all of this.

They KNOW this.

They understand that if ANY Democratic Legislature upholds, enforces or passes Laws to hold them accountable that they will lose their Wealth and more importantly, they will lose the Political Power as a Ruling Class Lobby.

This they have chosen to not cede.

They are therefore waging an all out war against Democratic Accountability.

Most ordinary people do not understand this because we are still fixated on the idea of Greed for Money rather than the matter of Wealth as Power, Wealth as a Ruling Lobby that dictates how society is to be run.

This war is a war against all of us, irrespective of our political leanings.

Solidarity is the only power we can exert. This they know and that is why they spend so much energy on dividing us......

When we build a rational solidarity, their Rule is over.

It's always worth studying leaders childhoods to see what patterns emerge.

artwork by Nikolai Kozin, London

It's fairly obvious to anyone who studies behavioural bullying the psychological projection and disassociation in David Cameron's public speeches about war, DAESH, Libya, and terrorism in general.

For example, on the kidnap and murder of three Israeli teens which became the pretext for the most recent Military assault on Gaza.
'This was an appalling and inexcusable act of terror perpetrated against young teenagers. Britain will stand with Israel as it seeks to bring to justice those responsible.'
But when have Obama or Cameron ever condemned the killing of Palestinian youths or children by Israelis in this vehement way? (from medialens.org)

There are parts of his psyche, formed from the experiences of his early infancy and Eton etc, that he has shut away within himself - the wounds accrued from fagging, the violence, the bullying, the hatred, the submission and affiliation with the more powerful 'inmates' and the cultured arrogance that he dare not admit to himself, let alone to the public, yet these experiences live within him, unresolved, unhealed and he projects them onto others so that he can 'manage' his own wounded feelings, his wounded sense of self.

He will say today that that experience was 'formative'. Many of his ilk do likewise. "It made me the man I am!"

To survive in this environment, the psyche of the child has to become deeply manipulative, and his behaviour, along with the behaviour of the established press, which is governed largely by ex-public school alumni, in the recent Scots referendum on Independence shows this quite clearly. When this psychology emerges in a Political leader with real material power to inflict harm, it becomes incredibly dangerous.

Likewise with regard to Obama and his early childhood. Adolf Hitler. Take your pick.

It's always worth studying leaders childhoods to see what patterns emerge.

This is not to offer any of those who exercise power and wage war an excuse - it is rather to attempt to gain an understanding of why they behave as they do, to outline a reliable grounded evidence based description of the cultural social psychological backdrop within which such a dysfunctional psychology emerges in statistically significant numbers.

It is to inform and to help parents at the grass roots of society and elsewhere to regain empathy for children, and not least for themselves as children growing up in such a culture, as a social movement that leads to the emergence of empathic power as a shared and caring sense of responsibility towards each other. As a basic marker of biological human biological health.

European culture has been on this trajectory of slowly recovering from this trauma cycle for some centuries, and it will take some more time to complete the process. This is scant comfort for those who are at the receiving end of powers brutalities, it does little to diminish the reality of the concrete experience of oppression perpetuated by Power.

It does however speak to the deepest nature of the human spirit, the reality of optimal human biological health as a fundamental and the need for action that is threaded into a long term perspective as well as dealing with the immediate concerns - these two go together.

Reality check : abuse is systemic in Institutional Power.

This has to be said : the issue of abuse of power, especially the abuse of vulnerable people who have little voice or ability to counter the behaviour of Power is linked to the struggle for a decent, empathic society across a range of areas, from politics, to environment to psychological indoctrination to religion.

I see no critical difference between the abuse of children by pedophiles and the abuse of Iraqi and Afghan people as perpetrated by Tony Blair and George Bush et al. Or the abuse of disabled people, which as led to an extra 73 deaths per week, as perpetrated by George Osborne and David Cameron, and by extension, the Civil Service. Institutional Power is mediated by people and cannot abuse without the participation and direct compliance of those people.

In truth the 'system' we were born into is the same dynamic as an abuse family... the abuser, the abused, the scapegoat, the rebel, the cast outs, the appeasers and those who ignore what is going on, who keep their heads down, etc all appear in these situations..

Full Moon and Lunacy.

Someone made a comment on the beauty and largesse of last nights full moon. And the apparant increase in 'loony' behaviours......

I think the Power psychology of the Society we live in has a LOT more to do with the emergence of 'madness'  - or psychological dsuress - than any other single factor.

And, as we know, the Society and it's Institutions likes to distract us from that realisation as much as possible.

Hows' this for 'madness' :
I find the way the media are talking about the dieing, the shredding of lives, is really, really grim. It's prices of bombs, numbers of planes, maps, graphics and plans, it's fbreathless ootball reporting, ainterviews with 'players', managers and fansd; a make believe make over of ugliness and studpity that is all the more apalling by virture of the fact that it is 'showbusiness'.

Adult Psychological Distress and Physical Disease linked to abuse and mistreatment in childhood.

Here are four recent articles that show a direct causal link between child mistreatment and adult disease and distress, as 'discovered' by Scientists.....

‎1. Abused Children Appear Likely to Have Mental Disorders as Young Adults http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/07/100705190540.htm

2. Link Between Childhood Physical Abuse and Heart Disease

3. Child Sexual Abuse: A Risk Factor for Pregnancy, Study Finds

4. Disclosing Sexual Abuse Is Critical

This is all common sense, yet such is the myopia of Western Industrial Civilisation, that it requires some formal Scientific Proof..... doh!

This is merely the tip of the Iceberg..... Childhood mistreatment is a wide spectrum of behaviour, ranging from gentle manipulation and humiliation to outright protracted violence, and is evident in State and Private Education, State and Private Care, Parenting by adults who have not been able to resolve their own trauma, Religious Indoctrination, PE or Sports Education and Military Training.

These behaviours are in fact deeply EMBEDDED into the underlying psychology of Western Industrial Society and are at the roots of many of the problems we are all currently faced with. The unwillingness of The Vatican, The Canadian, US, Australian and British Governments to fully  acknowledge the historical and current abuse of Native First Peoples which is well documented and was formally legalised in many cases demonstrates that this is indeed the case. Why else would they avoid the truth?

There are NO GENETIC components for any of the above described links, other than if untreated, over time, those behaviours do re-write or alter genetics of entire populations. Studies of 'civilised' populations are thus wildly inaccurate in terms of describing Human Nature. They describe the conditioning, which is NOT natural, as it runs counter to the biology of the natural child.

And what is true is that for most of History these abuse and trauma patterns have not been treated or resolved. War after war after famine after collapse, which the Bible describes, and indeed is partly the seeding of such psychology, which our own Histories describe and no real healing, no full disclosure of the abusers; just the desire to cope which allows one to be manipulated. All of which is understandable enough.

Our Society mediates much abuse as 'normal', even desireable, and justifies it as the struggle for survival, the survival of the fittest, as the selfish gene, as competition, as the 'superiority' of white Europeans and their 'culture/religion' over native savages and their traditional ways.

Here's a paper written in 1975, that looked at hunter gatherer societies and PROVED that there is a direct link between childhood mistreatment and the emergence of a violent society, and that that mistreatment is ALWAYS mediated by Power and Hierarchy so as to maintain it's status. And it is in the minds of such people that the struggle for survival, the competition of the fittest, the selfish gene exists and not in Nature. And it is in their own interests that they promote such ideas.

I present these data to you to help explain the dynamic of abuse that we are faced with so as to enable an appropriate long term response to these problems.

There is no need for Aliens, Reptiles, Demons, Satan or The Annuki to understand the genesis of such behaviour.

Here's how, in my understanding, it runs.

There are and have been communities of people on Earth, living within and emerging from the Natural Habitat. The majority of which have always been egalitarian, non-hierarchical, non-violent and stable over long, long periods of time. This is a biological reality. The human being, the mammal, the animal, is profoundly sensitive by nature, as in we inherently embody a sensory acuity that senses across a range of wavelengths of energy, and that due to it's subtlety and finesse enables us to read our habitat and all who dwell there with great accuracy so as to mediate our nurturing within nature.

Some of few communities may well have experienced a trauma or extended series of traumas that they were unable, for what ever reason, to resolve internally, and so they adopted controlling patterns of behaviour that arise from the feelings of insecurity and pain that they were unable to resolve, that remain within, suppressed and internalised to the extent that they direct the thinking and externalisation of the need to exert that level of control. These patterns of behaviour are passed from generation to generation in what we now call trans-generational trauma patterning.

Add to that the tool making ability of the human being and one has the basic ingredients for an abusive hierarchically structure society that seeks to extend it's control through deveolping ever more advanced tools to enhance that control - from rocks and fists to swords and tasers, etc and of course psychological tools - religiosity as opposed to spirituality. A toxic mix indeed.

An abuser tends to condition those he or she abuses to accepting the status quo by manipulation - and those caught up in the abuse dynamic will accept that manipulation and their 'role' within the abuse system in order to survive... some will become apologists, some will try to 'reform', others will rebel and be scape-goated, others will simply disintegrate or go 'mad' with pain - and all will be manipulated by the abuser.

And so it is with Elite  Power and The Middle Classes - the poor and The Native Peoples are, of course, the scapegoats.

Understanding these dynamics, examining one's own experience for correlation and doing the hard work of resolving as best one can the issues that arise are the first steps in changing the system of abuse -  because one has to excise and resolve the systemic abuse dynamics and their effects from within oneself in order to be able to see it for what it is in the society one is born into or within which one lives - further steps require a confrontation with the abuser and the abuser system on our own terms as natural people (not theirs, not ever!) and that of course requires support from the entire community.

We have a way to go. So get on with it!
